What Is a Wisdom Tooth?
Wisdom teeth — also called third molars — are the last set of teeth to grow, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. Many people have wisdom teeth that are impacted (stuck under the gum or jawbone), which can cause pain, swelling, and infection.
Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. The dentist will assess your specific situation and advise whether removal is necessary.
Signs Your Wisdom Tooth May Need Attention
- Pain at the back of the mouth, especially when biting or chewing
- Swollen, red, or bleeding gums around the back tooth area
- Difficulty opening your mouth fully
- Bad taste or smell from food trapped around the wisdom tooth
- Jaw pain or ear pain on one side
If you notice any of these signs, it is worth getting an X-ray to check the position of your wisdom tooth before the situation worsens.
What Happens During a Wisdom Tooth Assessment at LS Dental?
At LS Dental Clinic Ipoh Garden, we follow a clear, unhurried process:
- Dental X-ray (OPG panoramic X-ray or 3D CBCT X-ray for complex cases) to see the exact position of your wisdom tooth
- Clinical assessment — is removal necessary, or can it be monitored?
- Clear explanation of what is found, what the options are, and what to expect
- You decide — no pressure to proceed immediately
Is Wisdom Tooth Removal Painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, which numbs the area completely before we begin. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the process is — you may feel pressure, but not pain.
After the procedure, mild soreness for 2–4 days is normal and is managed with prescribed pain relief.
Recovery Tips After Wisdom Tooth Removal
- Bite gently on gauze for 30–60 minutes to control bleeding
- Avoid hot food and drinks on the day of removal
- No smoking or drinking through a straw for at least 3 days — this can dislodge the healing blood clot and cause a painful dry socket
- Take your prescribed medication as directed, including antibiotics if given
- Eat soft foods (porridge, yoghurt, soft rice, soup) for 3–5 days
- Rinse gently with warm salt water starting the day after removal
