3D Intraoral Scanner
Digital impressions of your teeth — no putty, no gagging, no waiting.
A 3D intraoral scanner is a small handheld wand that captures thousands of images per second to create a precise, full-colour 3D digital model of your teeth and gums in real time. It replaces the traditional method of taking impressions using cold, thick putty that many patients find uncomfortable and that can trigger a gag reflex. The digital scan is ready in minutes, can be reviewed immediately on screen with you, and is sent directly to the dental laboratory for fabrication of crowns, bridges, aligners, and other restorations.
Signs You May Need This Treatment
- 1You have been told you need a crown, bridge, dental implant crown, or aligner
- 2You gagged or found traditional putty impressions uncomfortable in the past
- 3You want a more precise and comfortable alternative to conventional impressions
- 4You are starting clear aligner treatment and need a digital treatment plan
- 5The dentist has recommended a 3D scan as part of your treatment planning
What Happens During Your Visit
Preparation
No special preparation is needed. The scanner tip is cleaned and covered with a disposable sleeve before use. The dentist or dental assistant will guide the scanner wand gently around your teeth.
Scanning
The small wand is moved slowly over your teeth and gums, capturing thousands of images per second. The 3D model builds in real time on the screen. Most full-mouth scans are completed in 3–5 minutes.
Real-Time Review
The completed 3D model is immediately displayed on screen. The dentist can rotate, zoom, and review every surface with you — showing you exactly what the tooth looks like from angles that are not visible in a mirror.
Digital Transmission
The scan file is sent digitally to the dental laboratory for precise fabrication of your restoration, or used to generate your aligner treatment simulation. No physical model needs to be posted.
Benefits of This Treatment
- No impression putty — no gagging, no discomfort, no taste
- Faster — a full-mouth scan takes 3–5 minutes versus 5–10 minutes for putty impressions
- More accurate — eliminates distortion that can occur with putty impressions if the patient moves or the material shifts during setting
- Immediate review — the dentist can show you the 3D model of your own teeth on screen during the appointment
- Digital transmission to the lab — faster turnaround and no risk of a physical impression being damaged in transit
- Used for crowns, bridges, implant crowns, clear aligners, retainers, and orthodontic records
